At the first meeting of the year, Marist JCL invited its officers to share some delicious gelato after school! The new officers were sworn in before planning for the upcoming Activities Fair and other events at the beginning of the school year.

At Marist's annual activities fair, we promoted Marist JCL and Myth Madness, our certamen-style competition series that prepares middle school students for the Pegasus Mythology Exam later in the year.

Mount Vesuvius
September 23, 2022
One of our most prominent annual JCL events is our Mount Vesuvius Festival! Come watch Marty, Doc, and Biff as they travel through time to witness the explosion of Mt. Vesuivus🌋. This year's theme: Back to the Future.

Fall Forum

In the middle of October, a few Marist JCLers traveled to Wheeler High School for Fall Forum. They held a mythology workshop for anyone who was interested in the Medusa Mythology Exam or just wanted to learn more about mythology in general.

Read-A-Thon
October 24, 2022
From dawn to dusk, Marist JCLers and faculty stood outside, reading the entirety of Homer's Odyssey for our main yearly fundraiser. This event raises money to fund our annual Mythopaloosa in the winter. 📖

Open House

At Marist's annual open house, Latin students represented JCL and our Latin program to visitors and future students. With a full display of Roman culture (including togas and Latin Christmas hymns), our JCLers won the hearts of all passersby.

Cocoa and Carols

Felicem Natalem Christi! Merry Christmas!🎄JCL and LHS members, Latin students, and passersby sing festive Latin songs while enjoying cups of hot cocoa☕. Top Hits include "Adeste Fidelis" (O Come All Ye Faithful), "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" (O Come O Come Emmanuel), "O Viri, Este Hilares" (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen), and many more.

Concordi Laetitia Gregorian

A group of local cantors stopped by Marist to teach our chapter about Gregorian hymns and practice with us. Members of Marist JCL and other students alike came to this session, where they learned new Latin hymns from the Middle Ages.

Marist is hosting its first certamen tournament since the pandemic. Top teams from across the Atlanta area will gather to compete and win trophies, book prizes, and eternal glory!

Mythopaloosa
January 28, 2023
Marist is hosting its eleventh annual Mythopaloosa in January. Games, contests, and activities will help students from across the Archdiocese of Atlanta prepare for the Pegasus Mythology Exam in March. This day is sure to be filled with fun, learning, and pizza!

Latin Liturgy of the Hours
February 24, 2023
Marist's annual Latin service, hosted by Latin Honor Society, will be celebrated in the chapel, featuring hymns, prayers, and more, all in Latin. Stop by to experience how Catholic liturgies were originally celebrated, featuring prayers such as the Pater Noster, the Adoro Te, and Marist's favorite, the Salve Regina.

Agonalia

Agonalia is a certamen tournament directed towards younger students who have little certamen experience. This event has more pop culture-themed questions and no playoff rounds, helping to create a fun, low-key atmosphere.

GJCL State Convention
April 14-16, 2023
State convention provides Latin students from across the state with fun opportunities like Roman-related workshops, the bazaar, a dance, and competitions in academics, athletics, certamen, art, and more! Come with Marist JCL to show off your Latin (and other) skills, meet more Latin students, and have a fun weekend with friends.

APRIL
National JCL Convention
July 23-29, 2023
National convention is like state convention, but on another level. This event is a week-long and full of opportunities to meet new friends, compete in sports, art, academics, and certamen, and much more! This year, national convention will be held here in Georgia, at Emory University.

Membership Advisory Committee
2022-2023
Led by the GJCL 1st VP, MAC is a student committee that focuses on expanding membership in GJCL. MAC organizes and runs events like Agonalia and the State Convention service project. This is a great way for students to get involved in GJCL leadership.
